Can I sell my closed company's data?
Can a closed company license its data?
Often, yes. AI data companies license de-identified business records, including messaging data from Slack or Teams, from companies that have shut down. Whoever controls the company's records, such as the founders, the board or an estate, decides whether to go forward.
What could it be worth?
The ranges AI data companies have published run from about $100K to $2M+, depending mostly on headcount, how many years of records exist and which systems were used. These are ranges, not offers. Each buyer runs its own review and some companies won't receive an offer.
Who gets paid?
The buyer pays the company or its estate a license fee directly, under an agreement you sign with them. Founders Dividend is paid a referral fee by the buyer, so owners pay nothing.
What about customer and employee data?
This is the most important thing to review. Each buyer sets its own rules on what's excluded and how personal information is handled, and you approve what's included. Have your attorney review customer contracts, consent and employee data before you sign.
Is this a real market?
Yes. Data from shut-down companies has been sold in public bankruptcy proceedings, including the Spirit Airlines sale, where data was to be delivered only in de-identified form.
How do I start?
Answer a few quick questions about headcount, country and your messaging data. If you qualify, we send you the buyer's application link.
